Class Description

This course will focus on traditional methods of working copper plates. Intaglio techniques include a number of rich and varied processes that lend themselves to traditional and contemporary images. The class will cover etching, drypoint, aquatint, use of soft and hard grounds, and the combination of techniques on a single plate. Printing techniques are demonstrated, including color printing, and the registration of multiple plates. $55 Supply fee is optional and is recommended for a beginner. It includes $45 for 8” x 18” copper and $10 for class supplies besides those listed in bold. Supply fee is payable to instructor at first class session. *includes 15 hours of open workshop time Instructor Bio: Frederick Mershimer was raised in Sharon, Pennsylvania and received a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University, where he majored in painting and drawing. After moving to New York in 1983, he began to study printmaking at The New School, Pratt Graphics Center and Manhattan Graphics Center. Since 1984, mezzotint engraving has been the focus of his work. Mezzotint is a 17th century subtractive process in which the artist works from dark to light. His images explore the dynamic between the city’s architecture and the individual’s place within the world. Night, with the transforming property of its light, is often the subject of his work: the reality of the world by day gives way to romantic and mystical undertones after dark. His mezzotints can be found in many private and public collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum, The British Museum, Detroit Institute of Art, and The National Gallery of Art. His works have also been acquired by Georgetown University Art Collection, Harvard’s Fogg Museum, the Library of Congress, New York Public Library, and RISD Museum.
