Class Description

This two-class intensive photogravure printing class will guide you through all the steps necessary to achieve an exhibition print. The class will include finding the correct press pressure, paper selection and handling, mixing ink, wiping the plate, editioning, drying and storage. For those interested I will offer a Chine collet demonstration. Photogravures do not have to be black; you can add color to your ink to change the tone. Add yellow or red for a warm tone. Add blue or green for a cooler tone. Or just go crazy with color and see where it takes you. Supplies: Oil based intaglio ink, Transparent base, spatula, light plate oil, Takach regular tarlatan, rasps, and other tools for beveling, Viva paper towels, cotton rag printing paper, kozo or gampi for Chine Collé, craft tissue, blotters. Cotton Rag Papers suggestions: Hahnemuhle Copperplate, Sommerset, German Etching Asian papers: Gampi, Kozo, Hanga in colors or toned whites for Chine Collé Inks: I prefer Charbonnel 55981 Black. For transparent base, I like Gamblin. Only use oil-based ink for this class please. *includes 1, 4 hour session of open workshop time Instructor Bio: Beth Ganz was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. She received her BFA from Pratt Institute where she graduated with honors. For over 35 years, she has lived and worked in New York City. Her practice incorporates painting, printmaking, photography, and collage. She is a long- time member of the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts and is an instructor at Manhattan Graphics Center where she teaches photogravure and other intaglio methods. Solo shows include ATLAS PROJECT in 2017 at Cynthia Reeves, Mass MoCA, Geothermal Topographies at CYNTHIA-REEVES, NYC, and High Latitude at AFP Gallery, NYC. Her work has been included in many two person and group shows nationally and internationally. She is well represented in many private, museum and corporate collections including: The Hofstra Museum, New York Historical Society, New York Public Library Prints Collection, Library of Congress, US Department of State Art Bank, World Trade Center Memorial Museum, Johnson and Johnson, Legg Mason, Squib Corporation, and Tommy Hilfiger Corporation among others.
